- Officiating | Dorset Athletics
Athletics Officials Dorset Volunteering Dorset Officiating athletics Dorset Officiating Get closer to the action Officiating - judging or assisting at athletics competitions - is a great way to see the action from close up. It also makes you a vital cog in the machine as without officials to judge the events there can be no athletics competitions. Officials can choose to specialise in areas such as field events, track judging, race starting, timing, photo-finish and directing athletes in cross country races. England Athletics runs courses that will help you become qualified in whatever you are interested in and to the level that suits you. The higher your level of qualification, the more opportunities you will have to officiate at regional, national and even international athletics events. Officiating is fun, flexible, educational and great for mental and physical health – and gives you the chance to make lots of great memories and friendships along the way. Being at the heart of events, officials can be the friendly smile, the encouraging voice and the supporting influence to inspire and encourage the next generation of people to progress within the sport across all the roles. If you are able to come to one or two events per year, help out once a month or once a week, there is an opportunity for everyone to be a part of the officiating community. The officiating journey A good athletics official is diligent, observant, enthusiastic and encouraging. No experience of the events is required although it certainly will help. The technical aspects of judging the events and how to work with athletes, coaches and your fellow officials are all covered in the courses run by England Athletics. If you are unsure what type of officiating you would like to do or are not clear what is involved be sure to speak to an official at your local athletics club. They will explain the different tasks involved and help you decide what area to specialise in. - Coaching | Dorset Athletics
Athletics Coaching Athletics Dorset Dorset Athletics Coaching Sports coaching Athletics coaches Dorset Coaching A highly rewarding activity Athletics coaching is at the heart of our sport. It ensures that clubs provide junior and senior athletes with appropriate guidance on how to train and compete safely and effectively. Coaches give their pupils the best chance to improve, be it learning a new skill, beating a personal best or winning a competition. They love their sport and thrive on helping people meet their goals. You can begin your coaching career as an unqualified helper at a club. However, we would urge you to get on the coaching pathway and gain qualifications to better support athletes. England Athletics runs many courses which allow you to become an effective and qualified coach. Dorset Athletics and your local club can help you on this coaching journey. Check out the information below. The coaching pathway There are two main paths in athletics coaching: off track and track & field. Off track coaches are qualified to lead running groups on the road and cross country. If you regularly run with a club around your local area and want to coach a group then you will need to take a course to become qualified as a Leader in Running Fitness (LiRF) and then a Coach in Running Fitness (CiRF). The track & field pathway allows you to work with junior and senior athletes in the T&F environment. The first level of qualification is Coaching Assistant which allows you to teach the basics of running, jumping and throwing. The next level is Athletics Coach which additionally teaches physical preparation and core technical knowledge across seven events. An Athletics Coach will specialise in throws, jumps, sprints/hurdles or endurance. Eventually an Athletics Coach can qualify as an Event Group Coach specialising in one of those four areas.
